LOT 109: Bassa Geh-naw Ceremonial Mask

Bassa tribe, Liberia. An exquisite example with characteristic concave design, exaggerated forehead and pointed chin.

Geh-naw dancers would entertain spectators when initiated boys returned from bush camp or when an important guest visited the village.

Worn attached to a woven framework on the forehead. The wood has a lovely golden patina. Mounted on an oiled hard-wood base.

Unique 20th Century. Very good condition. Height with mount: 32 cms
