Fertility/Akuaba Doll (Ghana)

Akua'ba figures remain one of the most recognisable objects in African art. These delightful artefacts are associated with the Fanti people, part of the Akan group residing in Ghana. Still in use today, they are used by young women seeking to conceive, and are also considered to be a symbol of good luck. Characterised by their round disk-like heads, symbolising the life-giving force of the sun.

Unique, wood with glass beads. Very good condition.

Origin: Kumasi, Ghana. Latter half of the 20th c.
