Elephant Mask (Babanki, Cameroon)



A potent symbol of power, elephant masks are worn during festive ceremonies, by members of the secret society of the elephant, who consider it a special privilege to represent such a majestic animal.

A unique headdress, carved from wood and clad with stitched brass sheet metal (Repousse). The skull-cap/base is constructed from basketwork. Very good condition.

Origin: Babanki, Cameroon. Late 20th c. Sold with stand.
