Spoon-billed Sandpiper (endangered species)

Bronze

Without help the Spoon-billed Sandpiper is likely to be extinct by 2020. A wide partnership, including the WWT, is working to minimise the threats from inter-tidal habitat loss and hunting in East Asian non breeding grounds. Time is of the utmost essence and therefore emergency action is needed to establish a captive-bred population for release back into the wild when conditions have improved. To this end, young birds are being moved from nesting areas in the far north east of Russia, to conservation breeding facilities at WWT Slimbridge UK.
