Don Hawkley lives in Suffolk and uses the visual and physical textures he encounters in his immediate environment, to inform his often large-scale sculptural vessels. He works in white stoneware and his pieces are characterised by the use of slips, glazes and oxides to create rich patinas which enhance his simple forms. He uses traditional hand-building techniques, as well as altering thrown forms, often combining both techniques in one piece. Then, by a process of slow drying, followed by up to four firings, Don works and burnishes the surface of each pot until he achieves the desired effect.

After graduating in Ceramics and Sculpture from Birmingham University, Don taught Art and History of Art to A Level for many years before resuming his career as an artist in 2015. He is a member of Anglian Potters, exhibiting regularly in their group exhibitions, as well as enjoying a series of successful one-man shows at Snape Maltings and Aldeburgh.
